Info for Au Pair
The term "Au Pair" comes from French and means "on mutuality". You will be put up by a family in a strange foreign country for learning language, people and culture from this country. In countermove you supports the family in looking after the children and the housework. A job as an au pair in Germany will give you the possibility to discover a year of the fascinating meeting with the culture, the country and its inhabitants. You will get a lot of valuable experiences, which might bring you many benefits in you life (f.e. profession,study).
Requirements
- Age from 18 to 24 years old (citizens of the EU up to 30 years)
- Unmarried and have no children
- Basic knowledge of the German language (exception: citizens from the EU or from English speaking countries)
The host family offers to you
- 260 € pocket money/month
- Free accommondation and food
- Own furnished room
- 1 or 2 days off per week (min. one Sunday per month)
- 4 weeks paid vacation
- Insurance paid by the family against illness and accident
- Possibility to attend language courses
- You get a monthly ticket for the local traffic
- The family take you up like a family member
Duration of stay
Au pairs are included in the host family for the duration of 10 to 12 months mostly. In some cases the stay even can be shorter. For au pairs coming from non EU-/ EWR states (with the exception of Switzerland) or from the EU-member states Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czechia and Hungary the au pair contract must, however, be entered for at least 6 months. A renewed employment as an au pair is not possible even if the maximum duration of one year was not exhausted.
The tasks of an Au Pair
The daily tasks of an au pair are very different. They completely depend on the peculiarity and the lifestyle of the family, who has admitted the au-pair at themselves. Generally au-pair's duties include the following:
- light work at home, for examle cleaning, hoovering, washing or ironing
- making breakfast and preparing light meals
- looking after young children (going for a walk with them, playing with them, getting them to the kindergarten, to school, to friends…)
- looking after the house/flat and caring for pets
Holidays
If the au pair is employed in a host family for a whole year, a paid holiday of 4 weeks duration is entitled to him, otherwise for every whole month 2 working days holiday. If the family goes even on vacation, they frequently take the au pair with, however also certain tasks and obligations are to take on by the au pair. (e.g. support of the children etc.). However, a family vacation only then counts as holiday, when merely insignificant tasks are to take on and there is not an obligation to attend. If the au pair does not go along with the family an employment at another family (neighbors, acquaintances etc.) is not permitted.
Lodging and board
Lodging and board are provided by the family free of charge of course. In principle, a room of one`s own is at the au pair`s disposal within the family apartment. It takes part at the common meals together and receives the same meal as all family members. If a certain diet form is wished, the au pair should indicate this in his application.
Language courses
The possibility has to be given to every au pair, to take part at German language courses in the leisure time as well as to visit cultural and intellectually stimulating events. The au pair has, however, pay for the costs himself.
Pocket-money and travelling expenses
The expansion of linguistic proficiency and the general knowledge by a better knowledge of the host country is in the foreground of an au pair relationship. An au pair therefore gets no wage in the usual meaning but merely a so-called pocket-money. It amounts at the moment to 260.00 € in the month, independent of the duration of the house working time. As a rule, for the journey and return journey the au pair carries the expenses.
Health- and accident insurance, pregnancy
In any case an au pair has to be assured in case of illness, accident and pregnancy for the wohle stay in Germany. All insurance contributions are supported by the host family.
